Oil painting was once associated only with professionals, as ready made oil paints weren’t available. The basic pigments had to be purchased, ground to a powder and then mixed with oils. With the arrival of oil paints around 150 years ago, the technique that commanded the highest praise was ready to be sampled by amateurs and beginners. It is a unique form of painting, but it can be carried out by simple methods. Here is an abstract oil painting technique suitable for beginners.

Preparing the Canvas

If the canvas material is unprimed the first step would be to prime the canvas on which you’ll be applying your paint. This involves wedging to ensure the canvas is tension is appropriate and then applying gesso in even strokes with a broad brush to achieve a suitable painting surface. After the primer has dried, it can be smoothed a final time with sandpaper if required. The canvas is now ready to work on with oil or acrylic paints.

Painting the Canvas

There are many different approaches to creating an abstract oil painting on canvas. But what’s clear is that you don’t proceed to colour the canvas based on a vague idea in your mind. According to many artists a random oil painting involves multiple stages beginning with the foundational step where the basic idea of the painting is revealed using outlines made by charcoal. This is to establish the primary and secondary objects to be depicted in the painting and their positions in the background.

Charcoal to the Final Rendition

So you begin with charcoal, create a vague sketch, rub it off so as to remove the lines but still be able to see the idea. Then, use the brush and oil paint to re-draw those outlines to establish values. Then add color randomly, painting the darker areas first and then painting or leaving the lighter areas (areas which you wish to depict as being brightened by light) of the intended painting. The colours applied at this stage are subtle and random to establish tonality.

This is a typical technique to paint pictures that don’t depict minute, analytical details. But even without details you can create a pleasing painting and following this technique which is suitable for beginners. Painting in stages is systematic and provides a larger window for professionalism in an easier manner.

Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil. Oils used include linseed oil, poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. Painters often use different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and effects desired. The paints themselves also develop a particular consistency depending on the medium.

Always lay your oil paints out on your palette in the same order so that, with time, you’ll be able to pick up a bit of a colour instinctively. The proportion of oil (medium) should be increased for each subsequent layer in an oil painting because the lower layers absorb oil from the layers on top of them. If the upper layers dry faster than the lower ones, they can crack. Avoid using Ivory Black for an under-painting or sketching as it dries much slower than other oil paints.

If you are an art collector then you are going to want to know where to find oil paintings for sale for a low cost. Now granted you can find the reprints and prints for a low cost, but the originals can end up costing you quite a bit more.

The first place that you can check would be with an art gallery that specializes in paintings. Shopping at these can be a fairly expensive option, but if you are an avid collector then cost will not be an issue for you. Shopping at these locations will also help provide you with some protection from people selling reproductions as originals and they might even be able to provide you with paperwork verifying authenticity.

The second place to check for these items would be your larger craft shows. You might not think about using this venue, but at some of these you will be able to locate local artist that are selling their paintings here for a reasonable cost. By purchasing here though you will also notice that the art will usually have the artist that made it present as well.

The third place to look for these would be at various flea markets. Flea markets might not seem like a great place to shop for art, but if you consider that some people will end up clearing out attics to provide products for these locations you might be able to find the diamond in the rough here and obtain it for a low cost.

The fourth place to look for these would be on the internet. With the internet becoming so popular today you will notice more people are selling items of all shapes and sizes on here. You can at times manage to find some excellent oils on the internet at a very reasonable price. If it is possible you will want to make sure that they are able to provide you with a certificate that they are authentic paintings and not reproductions.

The fifth place that you can find these for sale at would be estate sales. If you are a buyer of art then you will notice that many people have estate sales when they pass on hosted by their families. At times the families will not know what all the person has in the home and sell everything. Some times the items that they are selling can include the original oils that you are looking for.

As an art collector you probably realize that original paintings will cost you more than prints. However, finding the original oil paintings for sale can be a challenge at times. The five places that are mentioned above will provide you with a great start as to where to look to find these items. You will also want to realize that other places will be able to provide you with what you are looking for as well.

Choosing exactly which oil paintings are right for however can be fairly difficult and the wrong choice can stand out like a sore thumb. The idea here again is to go things that won’t date, as well as things that say something about you personally. And of course they have to match with your colour scheme.

Fortunately there are a couple of options you can be sure won’t date. Ironically one of the best ways is to pick artwork that’s already dated. The reason this works is that people will (hopefully) know that it was dated when you bought it, meaning that you consciously decided on it rather than just failing to keep up with the times. Picking something retro or geek-chic can even be ironic in this sense, and getting an oil painting of a Star Wars character or Nightrider can be great for someone young and a bit alternative. In the same way paintings of anything or anyone iconic, such as Mohamed Ali, Elvis or Marilyn Munroe can give your room a hint of character and a spot of retro chic.

Of course this won’t be to everyone’s taste, but if you go further back you’ll start getting into more classic territory. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be unable to afford an original piece of old artwork, getting reproductions of your favourite well-known oil paintings can make a mature and cultured centre piece for your dining room.

If you want something that will draw less attention to itself however then a landscape can make a much more subtle addition to your walls and can also make the room feel more spacious. Though these are more ‘standard’ you can still choose something that reflects your personality as well as the ‘temperature’ of the room. If you have lots of mahogany for example you might choose an autumn scene, whereas a brighter more modern room might benefit from a beach with a palm tree.

Another option that demands less attention but won’t be to everyone’s tastes is to choose something abstract. This can be modern art or just attractive shapes and again the secret is to go for a design that appeals to you personally and fits the tone of the room. Some abstract art can be a little surreal and edgy however which may not be appropriate for more relaxing rooms unless you want to psyche out your guests.

So there are countless options when picking oil paintings and each can offer something different to the decor; it’s just picking the right one for you and your room.

Art paintings were done even when cave paintings and murals were made. With time, the subject of art painting got a boost. Experimentations became the order of the day. Different materials or surfaces and different color combinations marked the painting turf of different centuries.

Oil paintings had caught the imagination of painters even in the pre-renaissance era. Making these paintings through a pigment tied to the dry oil medium was in itself a revelation then. These art paintings were largely practiced on canvas; though paper, wood, papyrus, vellum was also heard of. It used the boiled mixture of linseed and resin or frankincense to create the painting varnish. Such varnish or oil helped with the paintings.

Oil paintings gave a lot of importance to layering. The under layers were made with turpentine oil and on top of that many distinctive layers of oil paints were used to provide with the necessary contours. It used hog’s bristle for bold shots and Squirrel’s fur for mild brush strokes. We are talking about the brushes here.

Watercolor paintings also had its fair share of glory and is still running well. Art paintings that evolved through the use of watercolors found its feet largely in the post renaissance time. It used pigments which are dissoluble in water solvent vehicle. Watercolor paintings are largely done on paper. With the invention of far many compact combinations of colors, even the paper has become wove paper today. Today the water colors come in metal tubes or dried depressed cakes.

Europe denied the revolution its impetus when it started using aniline dyes in bright-colored medium. This got duly exposed in sunlight and left the surface. This had caused quite a stir and subsequent downfall of watercolor paintings.

Another genre of art paintings were the abstract paintings. These were the most contorted but the freest expressions of the subconscious. Any defined image using visual dynamics as an illusion for visual reality marked such paintings. These art paintings did not draw any inspiration from real world whatsoever. Abstract paintings got the necessary fillip through George Braque and Pablo Picasso when they came with the Baroque movement and Cubism respectively.

Few of the masters who have envisaged and equally implemented art paintings are:

Cubism- he came up with Cubism and defined the world from a vantage point as conceived by the painter and not as perceived by him.

Impressionism- Paul Cezanne’s movement was ably taken by Renoir. It dealt with pointed images; pointed staircases leading towards pointed houses. Such pointed; peaked houses have been psychologically inferred as being the result of years of Nazi oppression.

Dali’s Surrealism and other art paintings that evolved out of Impressionism and romanticism were equally brilliant and still hold value.

Oil painting dries slowly than any other forms of paint because they are made of small particles of pigments that are balanced in a drying oil. While some of the artists might find this slow drying quality troublesome, most artists believe oil paints to be a required type of art media that must be taught to every art student. This is partly because of the many oil painting reproduction, which have been developed using oil paints. There are several advantages of using oil paints, aside from its robust quality. Oil paints could as well be left open for a long duration. In fact, oil paints could regularly be left opened to air for up to several weeks without drying. This characteristic makes it possible for an artist to work on a painting over different sessions with no fear of the painting drying up too early. Of course, this attribute could be seemed at as a disadvantage by some artists, because it takes few weeks for the project to be completed and the slow drying process could make it difficult to move on to the next stage of the project. Oil paints are as well outstanding for blending with surrounding paint. When blended on canvas, oil paints are able of creating artistic brush strokes and other blends, which are not possible with other forms of paint. For some artists, though, this advantage to oil paints could be viewed as a disadvantage, as it is possible to by chance blend colors while painting that were not meant to be blended.

People around the world want the beauty of original and classic art works in their homes or offices. It is not possible for everyone to spend on a Picasso original oil painting because it’s very expensive. But that dint stops them to look up to his paintings and would probably want to make them their own in some way or the other. Unluckily most original classics are so high-prices that they are way beyond the means of the average public. Oil painting reproductions is about as close as one can get without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for the original. Oil painting reproductions are earnest attempts to make works of art that has fascinated us for ages, more accessible. Oil painting reproductions are an affordable way to display replicas of favorite works of art in the home or workplace.

If you are collecting then you would really need to decide on some themes for your collection, what kinds of art and what sort of artists are you going to build your collection around. You can try looking online as there are now many galleries displaying original art from all sorts of artists at every price level. The important thing is to buy art, which you really like and enjoy, and at the same time select pieces that go together in some way to form a collection, which feels like it belongs together. If you are buying for investment, then buying art for purpose of making money is an unsafe thing to try. At times you can earn some quick cash but at times its very dangerous ploy. It has to be said that anyone who thinks they could invest in contemporary art and then sell it on swiftly at a profit is likely to be disappointed. It is always best to collect art that you really like and perhaps, if you are lucky, a long while in the future some of it might be worth something. Oil painting reproductions are earnest and true efforts to make paintings more popular. Talented painters punctiliously recreate the magic of sacred paintings. Indeed, some of the reproductions are so good even the most discerning viewer will not be able to tell the difference from the original. There are large number of companies available online which produce oil painting reproductions. It is believed that oil painting reproductions brings a certain flair and look to any room that highlights the beauty of the art and creates a powerful ambience.
