Oil painting was once associated only with professionals, as ready made oil paints weren’t available. The basic pigments had to be purchased, ground to a powder and then mixed with oils. With the arrival of oil paints around 150 years ago, the technique that commanded the highest praise was ready to be sampled by amateurs and beginners. It is a unique form of painting, but it can be carried out by simple methods. Here is an abstract oil painting technique suitable for beginners.

Preparing the Canvas

If the canvas material is unprimed the first step would be to prime the canvas on which you’ll be applying your paint. This involves wedging to ensure the canvas is tension is appropriate and then applying gesso in even strokes with a broad brush to achieve a suitable painting surface. After the primer has dried, it can be smoothed a final time with sandpaper if required. The canvas is now ready to work on with oil or acrylic paints.

Painting the Canvas

There are many different approaches to creating an abstract oil painting on canvas. But what’s clear is that you don’t proceed to colour the canvas based on a vague idea in your mind. According to many artists a random oil painting involves multiple stages beginning with the foundational step where the basic idea of the painting is revealed using outlines made by charcoal. This is to establish the primary and secondary objects to be depicted in the painting and their positions in the background.

Charcoal to the Final Rendition

So you begin with charcoal, create a vague sketch, rub it off so as to remove the lines but still be able to see the idea. Then, use the brush and oil paint to re-draw those outlines to establish values. Then add color randomly, painting the darker areas first and then painting or leaving the lighter areas (areas which you wish to depict as being brightened by light) of the intended painting. The colours applied at this stage are subtle and random to establish tonality.

This is a typical technique to paint pictures that don’t depict minute, analytical details. But even without details you can create a pleasing painting and following this technique which is suitable for beginners. Painting in stages is systematic and provides a larger window for professionalism in an easier manner.

Lifestyle photography is a focus on creating artistic photos from real life situations. For instance; when you take your child to a traditional studio they will be put in front of a backdrop with props and asked to pose, creating a “portrait”. A lifestyle session with us may include meeting you and your child at the park to capture them playing and interacting with you and their environment. On a lifestyle shoot we will make some suggestions for ways to interact or situations to recreate, but the goal is to capture actual moments as they happen.

Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments that are bound with a medium of drying oil. Oils used include linseed oil, poppyseed oil, walnut oil, and safflower oil. Painters often use different oils in the same painting depending on specific pigments and effects desired. The paints themselves also develop a particular consistency depending on the medium.

Always lay your oil paints out on your palette in the same order so that, with time, you’ll be able to pick up a bit of a colour instinctively. The proportion of oil (medium) should be increased for each subsequent layer in an oil painting because the lower layers absorb oil from the layers on top of them. If the upper layers dry faster than the lower ones, they can crack. Avoid using Ivory Black for an under-painting or sketching as it dries much slower than other oil paints.

London readers of Arts & Crafts who are studying drawing in pen and ink for illustration should not miss the present opportunity of studying at the International Society of Sculptors, Painters, and Gravers’ Exhibition, at the New Gallery, in Regent-street, the original drawings by Vierge of some of his illustrations to “Pablo di Segovia.” They will especially find it interesting, we think, to compare the finished drawing there of the incident in the Barber’s Shop with the artist’s first conception of the scene, which we reproduce on the opposite page. In several points of detail it will be noticed that these two drawings differ, but in the large and small paper editions of the book the variations in this same illustration are much greater.

Indeed the composition is quite different. In the small paper edition the customer’s face is hidden by the extension of the arms of the barber who is shaving him, the backs of both men being turned to the spectator. The young rascal behind the chair has already picked the customer’s pocket, and is handing the wallet to a woman who stoops at the half-opened door to receive it, the door being to the kit of the picture, instead of to the right, as in the original chawing.

Golden doesn’t offer as many colors in fluid acrylics as they do in their thicker, heavy body line (tubes & jars). Some of the heavy metal pigments just don’t mix work well with the fluid paint. The Golden Fluid Acrylic Paint is categorized into four main types:

    * Fluid Colors
* Fluid Iridescent / Fluid Interference
* Historical Fluid Hues
* Matte Fluids

Each of these sub-types has specific color characteristics, but each has the same FLUID characteristics.

Fluid Acrylics are self-leveling. This means they will will dry smoother, flatter, and thinner on the canvas.

With a high viscosity, gravity pulls the paint down into all the little dents and divot holes it the canvas so it you don’t have those little tiny specs on canvas showing through. The paint flows from the brush better with a softer brush.

If you paint vertically on an easel, but a little careful as this paint can result in drips if applied too thickly.
